Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James and injured New Orleans Hornets guard Chris Paul were named the Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Month, respectively, for the games played in January.

James garnered his third such honor of the season and led the East with 30.7 points per game in January, while placing second in assists (8.5 apg), fifth in steals (1.6 spg), and recording averages of 7.3 rebounds and 1.5 blocks. He led the Cavaliers to an NBA-best 12-3 record.

Paul, who will have surgery on his left knee Thursday to repair a meniscal tear, topped the Western Conference in assists (11.9 apg) and steals (2.4 spg), while scoring 20.8 points and adding 4.6 rebounds per game. He led the Hornets to a 12-5 record for the month.

Other nominees for the awards were Boston's Rajon Rondo, Charlotte's Stephen Jackson, Chicago's Derrick Rose, Denver's Chauncey Billups, Memphis' Zach Randolph, Miami's Dwyane Wade, Toronto's Chris Bosh, and Utah's Carlos Boozer and Deron Williams.
