World middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik's title fight with Paul Williams has been canceled because of a lingering hand injury, that according to trainer Jack Loew.
According to Team Pavlik, the healing process, following mutiple surgeries to remove a staph infection in Pavlik's left hand, has been slowed because of an allergic reaction to the antibiotic used to treat that infection.
At this point Pavlik has been unable to completely close his left hand during training, and as a result Loew has canceled the upcoming title bout.
Team Pavlik has announced they will continue to train and work with the injury. If the left had is able to close completely in the next two weeks then there is a chance the fight against Williams could take place on December 19th. If that does not happen then a new fight date will be set. The date given for that is January 23rd. However, there is no word on whether Paul Williams will agree to extend the fight a second time.
