After numerous reports hinting that WBC and WBO Middleweight Champ Kelly Pavlik could possibly face WBO#2, WBC#3 contender "Irish" John Duddy (26-0 17kos), a middleweight from the Mahoning Valley has indeed landed a shot with the Irishman. Current NABC Middleweight Champion, Billy Lyell (18-7) will battle Duddy on Friday April 24th at The Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. The Duddy/Lyell fight will serve as the 10 round main event. Lyell, a Niles Mickinley High and YSU graduate, hopes to make the most of his fortunate opportunity. Lyell states, "After graduating from YSU six weeks ago, I've been dedicating all of my time to training and preparation while waiting for the fight of my life. It came."
Lyell's manager, Pat Nelson, has lobbied for a Duddy/Lyell matchup for the past 10 months and was able to secure the undisclosed deal with Boxing Hall of Fame matchmaker, Russell Peltz, of Philadelphia. Nelson adds, "A major upset over a very highly ranked contender would place Billy Lyell high in the world middleweight rankings. With a win over Duddy, Lyell could secure fights with IBF Middleweight king, Arthur Abraham (28-0), WBA Middleweight champ, Felix Sturm (31-2) or even WBC,WBO champion and former stablemate, Kelly Pavlik." The April 24th card is being promoted by Kathy Duva of New Jersey based Main Events Inc. Tickets for the event can be purchased by calling Main Events at (973)200-7050.
