Vinnie Pizzuto has been wrestling since he was four.
""There's no other sport like it. Once you win , it feels so good," says Pizzuto.
A four-year letter winner for the Blue Jays wrestling team, Pizzuto currently has 117 career victories. As a sophomore he finished sixth at the State Tournament. As a junior he placed fourth. He's won three major tournaments his senior year including the prestigious Josh Hephner tournament held at Austintown-Fitch.
"Each week I'm building more and more confidence. I'm taking it match by match. All these first places, and everything I'm winning, I hope in March is my ultimate goal to get first. It would mean a lot. We had one last year. After seeing that, it drove me a lot this year. We would like to get six people to state this year and hopefully even get a team title."
Last spring, Pizzuto competed at the FloNationals Wrestling Tournament held at Walsh Jesuit High School. After losing to his first opponent, Pizzuto won an impressive eight straight matches to earn a sixth place finish. The performance helped earn Pizzuto a wrestling scholarship to Eastern Michigan. He has a 3.735 grade point average and is ranked 21st in his class. As a junior he earned All-Academic wrestling honors. He is a member of National Honor Society, has helped with the school blood drive, and is a member of the 4-H Club, raising pigs for show at the Canfield Fair.
"It's different. It's different. It gets my mind off of some stuff and I have fun doing it, and I enjoy it."
For his success on the mat and in the classroom, Vinnie Pizzuto is our Student Athlete of the Week.
