Saturday, June 4 became a historical day for two local softball teams as Champion and Poland made school history.

"I'm ecstatic," said coach Cheryl Weaver of Champion. Coach Reid Lamport of Poland, "It feels amazing."

After falling short in the '04 and '06 state title games, Champion's Coach Weaver finally got the chance to hoist the trophy.

"I kept thinking the third time has to be a charm for me and it was. The girls did it for me, and they did it for the school, and they did it for northeast Ohio," Coach Weaver stated.

27-0. A perfect season. A Division III state title. Before the season, this was just a dream for the Golden Flashes, now that dreams is a reality.

"A perfect season, what much more can you ask for?" said Champion senior Tawny Rogers.

Not very many teams can say they won a state championship, let alone go undefeated.

"It's indescribable, I don't even know. It's so exciting to be able to say state champs," said Lindsay Swipas, a Champion junior.

Champion junior, Haley McAllister said, "That's been our goal since the first practice and to accomplish it is amazing."

The Golden Flashes accomplished that dream, winning their fourth state title in school history.

Poland made the trip to Akron as well, looking for its first state title in school history.

"Five hundred, five thousand, five million mean absolutely nothing. I would have taken half of those and traded them in for a state title," said Coach Reid Lamport.

After losing 1-0 in the state finals last year, Poland hoped that this year didn't yield the same result.

"When we got up 1-0, it was kind of like the tides have turned for us. That's how I felt," Poland junior Erin Gabriel said.

In order to reach a goal, first you must have a goal. For the Poland Lady Bulldogs, that goal was to make history.

"It's everything we dreamed of. We've been saying state championship, and we finally got one," said Jenna Modic, a Poland junior.

"It just feels great. It's such history for Poland. To win that first state championship for us, it just feels awesome," stated Poland freshman Taylor Miokivic. Miokivic was responsible for the first RBI in state finals history for the Bulldogs.

The Poland Lady Bulldogs got the job done, winning their first ever state title.
