This past spring, United Local High School named Matt Mowery to the position of head varsity basketball coach. Mowery served as the junior varsity coach one year ago. He replaces Tim King who spent just one season at the helm in Hanoverton after the previous eighteen campaigns at Western Reserve.
The Golden Eagles will have to make up for 63% of the team's offense from a season ago as United lost five key contributors to graduation. Leading scorer, Brett Albright, returns for his senior campaign after averaging 9.3 points and shooting 66.7% (50-75) from the charity stripe and 23.8% (25-105) from beyond the three-point arc. Senior Kyle Widlicka will also be back after seeing action in 14 games as he averaged 0.6 points and 1.3 caroms. Sophomore Garrett Beech (0.4 ppg in 9 games) will most likely take on a more prominent role on the team in 2011-12.
A year ago, the Eagles shot 23.5% (54-230) from beyond the three-point arc and just 48.9% (160-327) from the charity stripe. United will have to improve on those two figures if they hope to increase their win total this winter.
United kicks off the season at home against West Branch on Friday, December 2.
