Boy, what a difference two weeks can have on the way a team plays. West Middlesex lost to Mercer 42-6 on November 4 to close the regular season with a 5-4 record; however, Friday night was much different.
The Big Reds jumped out to a 24-0 lead in the early stages of the third quarter en route to a 44-34 victory over Mercer. West Middlesex has won four of the last five games. In their four victories since October 21, the Big Reds have outscored their opponents by a count of 195-55. West Middlesex (7-4) will now advance to the District 10 Class A finals next week against Sharpsville which will be a rematch from the 2006 title tilt when the Big Red won, 35-13.
Mercer (8-3) was denied their fourth trip to the district finals. The Mustangs had won eight of their last nine games prior to Friday night's shocking loss.
