Lakeview High School (PA) had a Coaches vs. Cancer event during a boys’ basketball game on January 17, 2012 against Sharpsville. For the event, the Sailors raised $9,764 to donate to the American Cancer Society. Lakeview set a $5,000 goal, and almost doubled it. Last year’s donation was $3400.
With merchandise sales totaling $2,536, the Students for Charity Advisors from the High School, Mr. Michael Rodriguez, and Middle School, Ms. Katie Krusey, and Students for Charity members sold 242 shirts, several lanyards, and donation cards.
The Coaches challenge was a fun way to generate funds for such a great cause. Representative coaches from each sports’ program helped raise money for the chance to compete in a one-minute foul shooting contest at half-time of the Varsity game. The top three contributing coaches were Baseball Coach, Bill Beith, with $1400 from a penny drive; Girls' Basketball Coach, Lonna Fischer, with $1426 from company and personal donations; and, Cheer Co-Advisors, Sandi VanDusen and Kendall Garczewski, with $1822 in donations and a lemon-shake/snow cone fundraiser. The overall total raised from all of the coaches was $7,228.
The top-two coaches who participated in the foul shooting contest were Lonna Fischer with the help of her daughter and junior high girls' basketball player, Raygen Fischer, and Kendall Garczewski with help from junior high boys' basketball player, Matt Partridge. At the end of the contest, a total of 20 foul shots were made by both coaches and players. With 12 of the 20 shots made, Coach Lonna Fischer was named the 2012 Coaches Vs. Cancer Champion. Coach Fischer received a medal and the game ball donated by Athletic Director, Deanna Booher.
