Shaner’s Panthers Aim for a Fast Start
The Panthers have just one victory against opponents that finished the season with a winning mark since the new East High School opened in 2007. However, Coach Brian Shaner is not ruling out a nice season which could have lots of people in the area surprised come November. “We maybe a little undersized but we are very fast”, Shaner says. “We got a good core of guys coming back”.

Shaner points out that team unity has been a problem in the past, “Trying to teach (the players) how to become a team. That’s our major obstacle. I think if these guys could realize that there can not be individuals on the field. I think that’d go a long way for us”. The former Rayen High coach adds, “I got a great coaching staff. They do a great job (of) being father figures to these kids”.

East opens the season with eight straight road games. Coach Shaner couldn’t be happier with being in that situation. “I like going into hostile territory with these guys because it gets them fired up.” The campaign gets underway at Liberty on August 27. The Leopards are “a great measuring stick for us”, says Shaner. “We got to get out of the gates fast. If you can beat Liberty, you know you’re headed in the right direction. I think week one, we’ll know where we stand”.
