Cardinal Mooney intercepted five passes in a 23-17 victory over Boardman Friday night at Spartan Stadium.  Braylon Heard picked off a pair of passes in the win, including a 90-yard interception return for a touchdown in the third quarter.

Boardman opened the scoring in the first quarter when Tyler Walls scampered in from ten yards out to Put the Spartans ahead 10-0.  Walls would later be carted off the field with an apparent leg injury.

Following a Mooney interception by John Stoops, the Cardinals would repond with a 6-yard touchdown run by Mark Brandenstein, but the extra points was no-good.  Mooney Kicker AJ Fox kicked a 39-yard field-goal as the first-half clock expired, to put the Cardinals ahead 9-7 at the half.

Karrington Griffin would tack on six more for the Cardinals in the third on a short touchdown run to increase the lead to 23-7.

Boardman would storm back on a Robbie Boyd 1-yard touchdown plunge to make it 23-17.  The Spartans would get the ball back with under a minute to play, but Braylon Heard intercepted Boyd's final pass of the night as the clock expired to seal the deal for Mooney.  Boyd finished the night completing 6-19 passes for 188 yards with five interceptions.   Boyd also rushed 18 times for 51 yards on the night.  Boardman Receiver Chase Hammond caught three passes for 154 yards.

Mooney Running Back Charlie Brown carried six times for 59 yards in the win.

Mooney hosts St. Francis DeSales in week two, while Boardman visits Cuyahoga Falls.
