2009 Points Per Game (Area Rank)
Points Scored: 25.9 (T-25th)
Points Allowed:  14.5 (19th)
Notes: In 2001, Boardman finished 6th in the area in points scored per game (30.9). That season marked the last time that the Spartans finished so high in the category.

Boardman concluded the 2009 regular season by winning five of their last six games to advance to the post-season. On November 7 at Byers Field in Parma, however, the Spartans’ season came to a close with a 17-0 setback at the hands of St. Ignatius in the first round of the playoffs. “We’ve been in the playoffs two of the past three years”, Coach D.J. Ogilvie noted. “It’s been proven that we can compete in (not only) the Federal League…we can compete with anyone in Division I football”.

Since 2007, the Spartans’ have posted a 12-9 mark in the Federal League. Compare that stat to Boardman’s first three years in the league (2004-06) where the maroon and white were only victorious twice in twenty-one outings against league foes. Ogilvie states, “our league is so deep that you never have a week off.” Senior linebacker Carmen Tarantino agrees, “every game matters”. Tailback Nick Buonavolonta exclaims that the Federal League is the “toughest league in Ohio in our eyes”.

After graduating three players to Big Ten schools this off-season, one would surmise that the Spartans would take a step backwards this year. That’s not the case. “We have good skill coming back this year…we’ve got to find some linemen”, says Ogilvie. The Spartans return senior Buonavolonta, who a year ago surpassed 1,000 yards rushing. Nick is receiving looks from Mid-American schools and Youngstown State. The Spartans will have two tall wide outs in 6’6 junior Dayne Hammond and 6’3 senior Trae Robinson. If Boardman can come across a few new decent starters, the Spartan offense could be very dangerous come November.

The defense will be anchored by senior Tarantino. As a junior, number 33 led the team in tackles from his outside linebacker position.

Breathers are not easy to come by when looking at Boardman’s schedule this year. The team will be competing against two of the most prestigious programs in all of Ohio in Cardinal Mooney and Akron Hoban in back-to-back weeks early on. Then the road only gets more difficult as the Federal League schedule begins on September 17 with a trip to Uniontown.
