Four area athletes chose to further their education and athletic careers at Pitt and Duquesne.
Austintown Fitch's twin football standouts, Demitrious and Chris Davis, are both attending Pitt on football scholarships.
Chris is a two-way standout at receiver and defensive back. He was named to the Northeastern Ohio Inland All-District and All-Federal League teams. Davis caught nearly 50 passes over his final two seasons. As a junior, he compiled 748 all-purpose yards to lead Fitch to a 10-2 record, the Federal League Championship and Division I playoffs. He is rated one of the top 40 players in Ohio by Rivals.
Demetrious is one of Northeast Ohio's top prospects despite playing in only three games as a senior due to a knee injury. He was an athletic quarterback who enjoyed a decorated junior season. Davis's 2010 honors included Associated Press first team All-Ohio Division I, Northeastern Ohio Inland District Offensive Player of the Year and Federal League Player of the Year. He was a 1,000-yard rusher and passer his junior season, running for 1,202 yards and 20 touchdowns. Davis also threw for 1,024 yards, hitting 62% of his passes (65 of 105), throwing 10 TDs against only two interceptions. Davis led Fitch to a 10-2 record, the Federal League championship and Ohio Division I playoffs. Demetrious is rated one of the top 40 players in Ohio by Rivals.
Boardman's Zack Zidian is headed to Duquesne. Zidian played on both sides of the line for Boardman and was named first team All-Federal League. He also earned a spot on the Associated Press Northeastern Inland All-District Division I Second Team and was also named to the OHSFCA Academic All-Ohio Team.
Cardinal Mooney's Amy Vinopal is also attending Duquesne on a soccer scholarship. Vinopal is a center/mid-fielder, who was named Division II “Player of the Year” in Ohio. She scored 26 goals and had 25 assists for the Cards this year. In addition, she was named to the “All State” and All-County” teams and was named Vindicator “Player of the Year” and “Fall Athlete of the Year.”
