Mathews basketball team had one of it's best years in school history, and for the first time, a Mathews senior has been named Player of the Year by the Trumbull County Coaches Association.

Senior Chris Morgan honored Monday during the 23rd Annual Trumbull County Basketball  Banquet at Leo's Ristorante on Market Street in Howland. Morgan helped lead the Mustangs to a conference crown and berth in the district championship game.

"Oh it means a lot," Morgan said. "Ya know, Mathews has had some pretty good players coming through. So, it's nice to finally get something for Mathews."

He averaged 17 points and 13 rebounds as Mathews racked up 18 victories. Morgan was also the team captain and a three-year letter winner.

"The best rebounder I've had the chance to coach," said Head Coach Ron Price. "But his unselfishness and his leadership is what really stands out in my mind; to go along with all the things that he obviously did on the court that people would see."

McDonald took home the top girls' honor in Trumbull County. Joh'Vonnie Mosley capped off quite a career with a stellar senior year.

"It means a lot," Mosley said. "It's a great honor and I just thank god for allowing me to have this talent and to win this award tonight. It's a great accomplishment."

She averaged over 22 points and 13 rebounds on her way to helping the Blue Devils to a berth in the District Championship Game. Mosley went over 1,000 points in her career as a junior and scored over 1600 in her time with the Blue Devils.

"I'm so proud of her right now," Head Coach Rob Hilbun said. "It's probably one of the happiest days as a coach. She's just phenomenal. She's a great person and a coach's dream really."

This is the third time a member of McDonald's girls team has been named Player of the Year. Ashleigh Tondo won in 2006 and Pam Vilk won in 1991.
