Ryan Bailey's ability in the water has allowed him to rewrite the record books at Boardman.
"It really didn't click that I had set the school record, too," said Bailey. "I had been chasing it since I had been here. That was one of my main goals."
As a sophomore, Bailey set the top mark in the school for the 100 yard butterfly; however, he takes just as much pride in the team record he holds, the medley relay.
"I think it's just the competition. I'm a very competitive person with myself and with others," said Bailey.
Don't be surprised if Bailey can soon take the title of state champ. After all, he was a state qualifier in three events last year.
"I think a lot of it's mental. My freshman year I wasn't confident in my abilities," said Bailey. "Working out a lot, staying in the water, and having great coaches and great people around me with my teammates has allowed me to grow."
Fortunately for Bailey, there's not much room for growth in the classroom. Although he's just a junior, Bailey has a 4.0 grade point average and is ranked first in his class.
"When I'm practicing, I know I'm focusing on what I have to do," said Bailey. "When I get home, I know I have stuff left to do when I get home. I just focus on each thing at a time, and I manage."
Bailey is also a member of Link Crew, Spanish Club, Math Club, and Medical Careers Club. Just a junior, Bailey hopes to continue his swimming career in college.
Congratulations to Boardman's Ryan Bailey, our Student Athlete of the Week.
