Mahoning Valley could only muster one run in suffering its first loss of the season Wednesday, 2-1. The Scrappers trailed 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning when Jason Smit singled into left field. Kyle Bellows scored. But State College starting pitcher Tyler Cox was able to strike out the next two batters to end the rally. State College jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Patrick Irvine knocked in a run with a bases loaded infield single. The Spikes plated their second run of the game in the bottom of the third when Tony Sanchez scored on Craig Parry's sacrifice fly to right field. Mahoning Valley starting pitcher Ryan Anthony took the loss but pitched well. He struck out two in his three innings of work. Kaimi Mead and Austin Adams both tossed three shutout innings in relief. Mahoning Valley begins a six game road trip tomorrow at Williamsport. The Scrappers return home Wednesday, July 1st.
