High school football is great. But a high school football game between two great communities is even better.
Poland's season opening battle with Hubbard on Thursday certainly qualifies.
"I think it's the type of game we need in this valley," said Bulldogs head coach Mark Brungard. "We need local teams to play each other. Hubbard and Poland are similar in size, they're close, and I think it should be played. Hopefully, it will continue."
These two teams were so eager to start the season, they could not wait until Friday to kick off. So they begin 24 hours before most other teams.
And Poland senior lineman Noah Hochendoner likes the jump start. "Normally, there isn't a Thursday night game," he says. "A lot of people come to see it. Hubbard is always a great opponent to start out the season."
These two programs have opened the regular season for the past three years, with Poland winning all of the matchups 24-13, 24-14, and 24-13.
A fourth straight victory will not be easy. Hubbard has a number of returning starters in the trenches and is seeking a 12th consecutive winning season.
"They have a lot of good, strong linemen," points out Hochendoner. "They're really big this year. And they have #42 Blake Novotny - he's big. He's a good, strong fullback."
The Eagles last defeated the Bulldogs in 2006.
"This has become an important game for both teams," Brungard stated. "We've been fortunate to come out on top the last three years, but we know that's just going to make them all the more hungry to come in here and get a win."
Fortunately for the Bulldogs, they will enjoy the home field advantage for this year's showdown.
Senior RB/LB John Medina calls the series "a rivalry because it's the first home game. Everyone wants to win their first home game."
But after three weeks of two-a-day practices, senior linebacker Clay Cooper is just happy to play a game that matters. "The intensity is higher. We're just ready to go out there and hit another jersey."
Kick off is set for 7:00 pm Thursday at Poland.
