Jeff Chahine is the Cardinals biggest card and he’s always entertaining teammates by doing things like wearing two different shoes.
"The one practice, I don't know, LeBron wore two different color shoes,” Chahine said. “So one practice, I came in with one black shoe and one home, white shoe."
Or by wearing a sleeve on his shooting arm: "Ah, nah, it doesn't help. It's just for looks."
Chahine is serious about his game, though, and he has blossomed in his senior season, going from role player to top marksman, averaging 12 points a game. Chahine connects on 35 percent of his three-point attempts.
He is also good for three assists and four rebounds a night as he earns his second varsity letter. Chahine led the Cardinals with 19 points in the Sectional Finals against Ravenna.
Chahine then netted 14 in a District Semifinal victory over Struthers, earning a spot for Mooney in the District Championship Game 17-5 record. In the spring, he will earn his second letter in baseball as one of the team's infielders.
"It really shows that hard work does pay off,” Chahine said. “I worked hard after my freshman year. It was a down year for me. I didn't play too much. That sort of motivated me to work hard, get in the gym, get stronger. That's what motivated me to get where I am today."
Chahine had too much fun his freshman year, and his grades suffered. He has since become more serious and now he's a 3.6 student.
"Right after my freshman year, my last report card, my freshman year, I saw my GPA and knew that wasn't me,” Chahine said. “I got a couple of talks at home, saying, you gotta turn it up now."
For improving his game and grades, Jeff Chahine of Cardinal Mooney is the Student Athlete of the Week.
