Victoria Ferry hopes one day she can be an optometrist.
"I have really bad eyes," said Ferry, who now wears contacts. "I've worn glasses since pre-school. So I always thought it would be cool to help someone else who has bad eyes."
She has the helping part down. As number one singles player on Liberty's tennis team, she is doing her part. She's already notched 13 victories.
"You have to be really mentally strong," said Ferry. "It's a game where you're out there by yourself. You just have to really focus on you and what you're doing. You have to analyze your opponent and be aggressive."
Ferry does all of those things. In fact, last year as a junior, she became the first in school history to qualify for the state tournament, finishing ninth.
"Going to state was like anything you could hope for," said Ferry. "It's what you work for. I was honored I got to go. I couldn't believe it, and I couldn't be more thankful."
When she's not busy working on her ground strokes, Ferry is usually working on her grades. She is ranked fourth in her class with a 3.98 grade point average.
"Tennis is nice, but you need your grades first and foremost."
Ferry is a member of National Honor Society, Pep Club, Art Club, Student Government, and International Club. She has volunteered for the Liberty levy committee and Second Harvest Food Bank.
She hopes to continue her tennis career in college. Ferry will attend Youngstown State, Mount Union, or Ashland in the hopes of pursuing a career in physical therapy or optometry.
