When he was just 12 years old, Nick Gigax rolled a 300 game, the pinnacle of individual success on the bowling alley.

"My mom didn't believe me," said Gigax with a laugh. "It was on April Fool's Day."

It was no joke. Now a senior at Struthers, Gigax has helped the Wildcats to a fourth place finish at state last year. He is hoping his per game average of 233 will help his team finish at the top this season.

"We're all prepared. We're all excited," said Gigax. "We want to go back and redeem ourselves."

His favorite sport is bowling, but Gigax is a golfer and baseball player, too. While the physical challenge each presents is fun, it's another aspect of each sport that serves as his motivation.

"The thinking involved in every sport is just something I can do," said Gigax. "I like thinking to understand how well I have to play."

He plays well in the classroom, too. He has a 4.0 grade point average and is in line to be class valedictorian.

"Non-stop studying," said Gigax. "Everyone kind of makes fun of me because of my grades, but I think they will help me for the rest of my life."

Nick is a member of National Honor Society, Interact Club, and youth ministry. He plans to attend either Slippery Rock or Walsh University.

"You have to put everything into it, both sports and academics. It's not the hardest thing if you want to do it. If you want to do it, then you can do anything."

For doing anything and everything, Struthers' Nick Gigax is our MyValleySports.com Student Athlete of the Week.
