She is the one who puts the Mustangs offense in motion.

Mathews Senior Kayla Manz is beginning her third year as the Mustangs starting point guard. She earned an All County Honorable Mention for her play as a junior.

She also earned All State honors as a setter this past fall in volleyball. She said all of the
responsibility actually makes her calm on the court.

"Yeah, I know that doesn't make any sense,” Kayla said. “I don't know, I just like it. I like the feeling of pressure and stuff to make me do better."

Manz is coming off a successful volleyball season during which she earned All NAC and All District on top of the All Ohio honors as the team's setter. She finished with 678 assists, 323 service points and 251 digs as Mathews went 13-0 in conference play and advanced to the District Finals.

Manz and the Mustangs went undefeated in conference play in volleyball, and advanced to the District Finals. She said she now wants to recapture the winning feeling in hoops, since Mathews is trying to bounce back from a seven win season.

"Mathews basketball teams, we've always been decent,” Kayla said. “Last year we had a rough year with injuries, but we still worked hard for the wins we had. So I think this year we, we want more because we fell back. So this year, we want to pick it up."

Kayla has earned a spot on the All State and All County squads for sports - and also a spot on the honor roll for her grades, and a 3.4 GPA. She is also a member of Service Learners, and now our Student Athlete of the Week.
