Kelsey Sekanick is one Tiger who really takes well to water.

Sekanick, the senior captain of the Howland swim team, finished first in all relay and individual during the season’s first three meets.

With her sights set on big goals and a foothold on history, the three-year letter winner is a natural in the pool.

"It gives me time to think about things,” Sekanick said. “You're swimming. I just like the water. I can't run. So I like the water. I started out in seventh grade, I tried to do track, and I couldn't do it, so I was like, I'm just going to stick with swimming."

Sekanick is a two-time district qualifier and a school record holder in the 200 medley relay. Now she is closing in on another mark.

"I just started swimming breast stroke again,” Sekanick said. “I messed up my knee a while back and I haven't been able to swim it. But I've been swimming it the last three meets and I'm two seconds away from the record so that's a possibility for this season."

Sekanick has taken on a lot of challenges outside the pool with 14 honors and advanced placement courses over her four years of high school.

She is seventh in her class and serves as president of National Honor Society. Sekanick is also a member of FCCLA, SADD, Key Club, Spanish Club, American Legion Auxiliary and the school newspaper staff.

"I guess you can say I'm an over achiever,” Sekanick said. I've always wanted to get the best I can get out of myself and I can reach these goals."

With a 3.8 grade point average, she is well on her way, making Kelsey Sekanick of Howland our Student Athlete of the Week.
