It's as predictable as the ball return: the Austintown Fitch girls qualify for the State Bowling Tournament every year.

Last year, Gina Cheff led the Falcons to a fifth place finish. She also earned a huge individual
honor, by being named the Federal League Player of the Year, which is tougher to get than a turkey.

"We wanted to win the Federal League all these years because it's more of an accomplishment than beating local
teams,” Cheff said. “There is more competition in Canton. We just practice harder."

Cheff owns a 202 average, but her grade point average is even more impressive. She is a 3.9 student with
only one B grade in all of high school.

"Ever since I was little, not necessarily a perfectionist, but if I got a B or a C, I was like, oh no, that is not
happening,” Cheff said. “And I would sit there and study for hours until I got it right. And I would make anyone help me I
could."

When Cheff is not practicing at Wedgewood Lanes, she volunteers at the Rescue Mission, blood drives and various health fairs because she will someday study to be come a nurse, she said. Cheff is also a member of the Key Club, Interact Club, Spanish Club and the English Festival.

"You know, its nice to get involved with stuff like that because I do someday want to become a nurse, and it's
experience to see that kind of stuff,” Cheff said. “But I just like to help out in anyway I can."

For helping her team and everyone else, Gina Cheff of Fitch is our Student Athlete of the Week.
