Anthony Cornwell's senior basketball season started out as a secret.

The third-year starter’s mother, Deirdre Cornwell, didn't want him to play, so he had to sneak his way onto the court.

"My mom, she said I do a little too much” Anthony said. “And this season, I told her I wasn't going to play basketball. My friends ended up getting me into it so I had to tell her I was a team manager at first."

Cornwell was very busy this fall on the football field. He led Chaney in tackles while catching the eye of recruiters from the MAC and Ivy League schools. Anthony owns a 3.7 GPA in honors classes and continues to push himself.

"Sometimes, I think I can be a little bit better,” Anthony said. “Sometimes when I get a B, I'm not satisfied. Sometimes you want to achieve more. But as of right now, I'm somewhat satisfied."

Before graduation, Anthony wants to help restore the Chaney tradition. The Cowboys won only five games last year, but so far this season, he's averaged 14 points and eight rebounds per game.

"People come up to me and tell me I'm going to succeed,” Anthony said. “I actually like it. It's nice to have people look at you from around the valley that don't even know you and see there are good kids at Chaney."

Being a good kid makes Anthony Cornwell our Student Athlete of the Week.
