YSU Swimming Wins Five-Team Invitational

The Youngstown State Swimming and Diving team finished first at the five-team Butler Invitational against Xavier, Hillsdale and Ball State at Fishers High School on Sunday. The Penguins scored 644.50 points to beat out the Musketeers for the team title.

Three Penguins earned first-place finishes in two events to help pave the way to the team crown.

Freshman Ashley Dow finished first in the 100 backstroke (58.46 seconds) and 200 back (2:06.63). Junior Samantha Roberts captured first in the 100 breast (1:09.75) and 200 breaststroke (2:27.32). In the one- and three-meter dive, junior Casey Hill dove her way to first place with scores of 347.35 and 265.10, respectively.

Senior Kirstin Walker won the 200-yard freestyle and finished second in the 100-yard freestyle. Laura Paz also clocked first in the 200 butterfly and second in the 100 butterfly.

YSU's relay teams also finished well, earning first place in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:39.05 and second place in the 200-yard medley relay clocking 1:51.64.

Megan Ciampa, sophomore, held on to two second-place honors in the 1,650-yard and 500 freestyle. In the 200 freestyle, senior Audy Grubbs took second with a time of 1:58.64. She also took fourth in the 100 free (54.98). Angela Diorio, sophomore, got third place in the 100 breast (1:10.47).

Xavier was second with 521 points, Hillsdale was third (507), Butler was fourth (224.50) while Valparaiso placed fifth (150).

The Penguins return to action on Friday when they visit Bowling Green. The dual meet against the Falcons is set for 5 p.m.
