The Westminster College softball team went a combined 1-3 this weekend in its final four games at the Rebel Games in Kissimmee, Fla.
The Titans lost to Fontbonne, 3-1, and William Paterson, 1-0, on Saturday before losing to Massachusetts Liberal Arts, 2-1, in eight innings and beating Utica, 10-1, on Sunday. Westminster is now 2-6 on the season after opening the season with eight games in Florida.
Fontbonne is now 2-0, MCLA is 1-3, Utica is 0-1 and William Paterson, the No. 19th-ranked team in the nation, is 1-1.
In Sunday's win over Utica, freshman Katie Hughes (Boardman, Ohio/Cardinal Mooney) led the Titans by going 3-for-3. Three other Titans posted two hits apiece, including junior DiAndra DiBacco (Boardman, OH/Cardinal Mooney) and freshmen Brittany Gamble (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) and Emma Kohley (Gibsonia, Pa./Pine-Richland).
Kohley hit a two-run double in the fourth inning to put the Titans up 9-0, after senior Jennifer Emery (New Castle, Pa./Laurel) knocked in two runs off a double in the third inning that made it 7-0.
Freshman pitcher Chelsea Brown (New Castle, Pa./Mohawk) earned the win by going a complete-game five innings with seven strikeouts while allowing one run off eight hits and no walks.
In Sunday's loss to MCLA, DiBacco led Westminster by going 2-for-4 and scoring the Titans' only run in the first inning when junior Lis Schulz (Gibsonia, Pa./Hampton) singled her home from third base.
MCLA tied the game in the third inning and scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning on Amber Coburn's RBI single.
Schulz took the loss for Westminster, going eight innings with two runs, six hits, three strikeouts and no walks.
In Saturday's loss to WPU, the Pioneers scored the one run of the game in the first inning when Christina Zippler scored after reaching base on a walk, advancing to second on a bunt, moving to third on a sacrifice and scoring on Nicole Walls' ground out.
The run came against Westminster junior pitcher Amber Crompton (Finleyville, Pa./Ringgold), who went six innings with four strikeouts, four hits and one walk.
The Titans compiled just two hits against WPU pitcher Jenna Vitale who got the shutout with three strikeouts.
In Saturday's loss to Fontbonne, Westminster posted six hits led by Hughes and Gamble with two apiece. Freshman Layne Carpenter (Marietta, Ohio/Marietta) absorbed the loss by giving up three runs off eight hits and two walks over seven innings with three strikeouts.
Westminster returns north and it will host Penn State-Altoona on March 23 beginning at 3:30 p.m.
