The Grove City College women's basketball team improved to 8-5 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference Wednesday night by earning a 64-51 win over visiting Thiel in conference action at the Grove City College Arena.

Grove City (11-11 overall) charged out to a 31-13 lead in the first half and maintained a double-digit lead throughout much of the second half. The Wolverines broke the game open with a 24-9 run in the first half. Junior forward Christine Slater (Aliquippa, Pa./Center) scored nine of her game-high 21 points during the run.

Freshman guard Leah Gibson (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover) drained a three-pointer and sophomore forward Jayme Caldwell (Smithville, Ohio/Smithville) deposited a layup to cap the run.

Thiel (6-15, 2-9 PAC) cut the lead to 31-21 by halftime but the Wolverines pushed the lead back to 14 early in the second half as junior guard Megan Gibson (Littlestown, Pa./Mars) tossed in a pair of layups.

Senior forward Laura Miller (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) joined Slater in double figures with 11 points. Leah Gibson added nine for the Wolverines, who are now 8-2 at home this year.

Slater secured 10 rebounds to earn her seventh double-double of the season. Senior forward Krista Beechy (Winesburg, Ohio/Berlin Hiland) distributed five assists while sophomore guard Megan Gebrosky (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) had four assists.

Grove City shot 44 percent (27 of 62) from the field while Thiel made 20 of 50 (40 percent) shots from the floor. Grove City owned a 34-32 edge on the glass. The Wolverines also forced 24 turnovers.

Ashley Davis led Thiel with 13 points. Kelly Barzak and Kelly Muffley both recorded 11 points.

The eight home wins are the most for the Wolverines since the 2004-05 squad went 8-4 in the Grove City College Arena.

Grove City will visit Geneva Saturday at 5:30 in a matchup of conference foes. Geneva is a provisional member of NCAA Division III, therefore, Saturday's game does not count in the conference standings.
