University of Pittsburgh athletic director Steve Pederson announced today the promotion of E.J. Borghetti to senior associate athletic director.

Borghetti is in his 13th year as a member of the Pitt athletic department. He has overseen the daily operations of the media relations office since 1998.

In addition to continuing his work with the Panthers' Top 25 football team, Borghetti will serve in an increased capacity, which will strengthen the overall athletic department.

This past year, Pitt was named to the inaugural "Super 11" field of sports information departments by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA), which honored those offices that were deemed the best in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision during the 2009 season. In 2007, Borghetti was honored with the "Scoop Hudgins Outstanding Sports Information Director Award" by the All-American Football Foundation for his outstanding work in football media relations.

Borghetti has enjoyed the privilege of promoting five first team All-Americans this past decade, including receivers Antonio Bryant and Larry Fitzgerald, linebackers H.B. Blades and Scott McKillop, and, this past season, tight end Dorin Dickerson. Fitzgerald stands as one of the most decorated players in Pitt history, winning the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award and the Biletnikoff Award, while finishing as the Heisman Trophy runner-up in 2003.

Aside from his media relations duties, Borghetti helps spread the word on the Panthers in other capacities as well. He regularly serves as an emcee for numerous athletic department and Panther Club chapter functions.

Borghetti has extensive ties to the University of Pittsburgh. He is a 1992 magna cum laude graduate from the school with a bachelor's degree in communications and was an undergraduate sports information intern. His father, Ernie, was an All-America tackle for the Panthers in 1963 and helped them to a 9-1 record and No. 3 national ranking that year.

Borghetti and his wife Lauren, a 1998 graduate of Pitt, have a one-year-old son, Branden.
