Area High Schools
Ed McCluskey guided arguably one of the greatest dynasties in area high school athletics between 1948-1977. During that span, his Farrell Steeler boys’ basketball program won seven PIAA Championships (1952, 1954, 1956, 1959, 1960, 1969, 1972), twenty or more victories during a single season sixteen times, and had a winning percentage of 79.5. Coach McCluskey’s teams were led by future NBA draftees: Brian Generalovich, Willie Somerset and Jack Marin.

After the 6’7 Marin’s career ended as a Steeler, he went onto play for Vic Bubas at Duke University. He averaged 14.9 points and 8.1 rebounds as a Blue Devil (1963-66). In the 1966 NCAA Tournament, Duke finished third by winning the National Consolation game over Utah, 79-77, behind Marin’s 23 points. Jack was honored after the season by being named to the Associated Press NCAA All-American second-team.

Number twenty-four was drafted by the Baltimore Bullets in the first round (5^th pick overall) of the 1966 NBA Draft. The south paw spent eleven years in the NBA playing for the Bullets, Rockets, Braves and Bulls. He was named the All-Rookie first-team following the 1966-67 season. The former two-time all-star (1972, 1973) scored a 14.8 average during his professional career and shot an astonishing 84% from the charity stripe.

Ohio State Buckeyes

Area Colleges
Ohio State’s 6’7 guard Evan Turner seems to be a lock to be a top three choice in this week’s NBA Draft. Turner was the recipient of the Dr. James Naismith College Player of the Year award for the 2009-10 season. The Chicago native joined Indiana’s Scott May (1976) and Calbert Cheaney (1993) and Purdue’s Glenn Robinson (1994) as just the fourth Big Ten player to receive this award.

The Villain, as he’s known, helped his Buckeye team to a 29-8 mark and a trip to the Regional Semifinal. He averaged 20.4 points, 9.2 boards, and 6.0 assists per contest in 2009-10.

The Cleveland Cavaliers are without a selection in Thursday’s Draft. This is the second year that the Cavs do not possess a choice since 2007. The Grizzlies own three first-round picks (12, 25, 28).
