Slippery Rock’s Don Pugliese and Youngstown State’s Eric Marzec may have their names called on day two of the three-day draft. Pugliese, a transfer from Marietta College, threw 55.2 innings this season while compiling a mark of 4-2 with 4 complete games. The 6’1 hard throwing West Allegheny alum finished the campaign with a 3.88 earned run average. In February, Marzec was named Baseball America’s top prospect in the Horizon League. The Canton Central Catholic product hurled a 3.92 ERA with five saves while amassing a 3-3 record in 2010. The 5’11 closer can also hit the ball as he clobbered the oppositions’ pitching by belting 6 homers and driving in 28 runs. Eric accumulated a .338 batting average for the Penguins.
The St. Louis Cardinals, one year ago, selected Slippery Rock’s Matthew Adams with their twenty-third selection. Adams has worked his way up the ladder from Johnson City to Batavia to his current team, the Quad Cities River Bandits. During his first two months in the Class A Midwest League, Adams has hit for a .273 average, 7 long balls and 30 runs batted in. Also, the 6’3 Philipsburg (PA) native is currently second in the league with seven doubles.
