In 1978, the New Orleans Jazz selected Jeff Covington from Youngstown State University in the fourth round. That same draft produced future stars such as Larry Bird (Celtics), Reggie Theus (Bulls), Maurice Cheeks (76ers), and Michael Cooper (Lakers). Although Covington never played a regular season game in the NBA, number fifty-five is heralded as the greatest player in school history. Covington is the school’s all-time leading scorer (2,424) and is second in rebounding. In 1978, Jeff was named the Division II Player of the Year. The Washington D.C. product was inducted into the Youngstown State University Hall of Fame in 1988.
